Description

CU-1c-1844-01 from Cuds on Coins records a rim cud on an 1844 Braided Hair Coronet Head Cent. Christian Gobrecht designed the Braided Hair type, struck from 1839 through 1857 as the final iteration of the United States large cent. These hefty copper coins, approximately 28 millimeters in diameter, were the workhorse denomination of antebellum American commerce. The 1844 issue was produced at the Philadelphia Mint — the only operating facility for cent production during this era. A rim cud represents the loss of part of the die's rim gutter: on the coin it appears as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course.
