Description
The 1842 (D) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle represents a Dahlonega Mint issue from the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 4,643, this is an extremely rare issue — ranked 2nd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 14% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Philadelphia and Charlotte mints produced quarter eagles, with modest mintages across all facilities. The Dahlonega Mint in Georgia struck gold coins from 1838 until its closure at the start of the Civil War in 1861. Estimated market value ranges from $4.5K to $43K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7725.
