Description
The 1842 (D) Liberty Head Half Eagle - Large Date is a Gold Half Eagle minted at the Dahlonega Mint, within the Liberty Head Half Eagles 1839-1908 series. Dahlonega struck 59,608 half eagles in 1842 across both date sizes; no split was recorded, and published estimates for the Large Date differ (21,691 and 15,824). The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons. Both large and small letter varieties exist at some mints. The Dahlonega Mint in Georgia struck gold coins from 1838 until its closure at the start of the Civil War in 1861. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.65 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8211.
