Description

Judd-109, Pollock-122. This copper restrike belongs to the celebrated family of 1839 Gobrecht dollar patterns, all sharing Christian Gobrecht's iconic seated Liberty obverse and flying eagle reverse. Struck with a reeded edge, this variety represents yet another die alignment or combination produced from the original Gobrecht dollar dies during the prolific restrike campaigns of the mid-nineteenth century. The base design from which these restrikes derive -- the silver Judd-104 -- was produced in meaningful quantities rated R.3, making it one of the more obtainable Gobrecht dollar varieties in its original composition. The originals were struck in medal rotation with a level-flying eagle, departing from conventional American coin alignment. Restrikes appear in both this original orientation and in standard coin rotation. As with other copper impressions from these dies, Judd-109 was produced strictly as a numismatic collectible, during the 1860s or 1870s when Mint officials freely accommodated collector demand for off-metal pattern strikings.
