Description
Judd-107, Pollock-120. This restrike Gobrecht dollar pattern shares the same iconic obverse and reverse dies as the broader 1839 dollar pattern series designed by Christian Gobrecht, but was struck in copper with a reeded edge. The obverse presents Liberty seated upon a rock, clutching a pole topped by a liberty cap, while the reverse depicts a majestic eagle soaring in flight surrounded by a field of stars. Judd-107 is distinguished from other die combinations in this series by its specific alignment characteristics. The original silver circulation strikes (Judd-104, rated R.3) were produced in medal rotation, an unusual choice for American coinage of the period. Restrikes from these dies exist in both the original medal-turn orientation and in standard coin rotation, with the eagle flying level in both cases. As a copper off-metal striking, this piece was clearly manufactured for sale to collectors rather than for any monetary purpose, reflecting the Mint's well-documented practice of producing numismatic curiosities during the mid-nineteenth century.
