The Silly Head is one of several transitional portrait styles used during 1839 as the Philadelphia Mint shifted from the Matron Head to the Braided Hair design, characterized by a whimsical-looking version of Liberty that earned its nickname from collectors who found the portrait style less dignified than its predecessors. The cud formed along the rim between approximately 11 o'clock and 3 o'clock, where part of the die's rim gutter was lost, leaving a raised interruption in the design rim, following its curve, on struck coins across roughly one-third of the rim circumference. An unusual die crack extends from the northwest rim to the southeast rim through the bust, following an irregular cross-die trajectory that is atypical compared to standard rim-to-rim cracks.
