Description

The 1839 Braided Hair Coronet Head Cent - Type of 1840 is a cent minted at the Philadelphia Mint, within the Braided Hair Coronet Head Cents 1839-1857 series. PCGS gives 200,000 for the 1839 Petite Head cents, a figure NGC does not use; the Mint reported 3,128,661 cents for all of 1839, most of them with the earlier portraits. The obverse features Liberty facing left with braided hair swept up and held by a beaded cord, wearing a headband inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT. First year of the Braided Hair design. The other 1839 cents, the 1839/6 with the Head of 1836, the Head of 1838, the Silly Head and the Booby Head, are in the Modified Matron Head series. Struck in copper, weighing 10.89 grams, 27.5 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #1817.
