Description

Judd-82 Restrike is a later production of the transitional 1838 half dollar pattern combining the Liberty Seated obverse with raised letters (Obverse 2) with the regular Capped Bust reverse of 1836-1837 (Reverse E). Like its original counterpart, the obverse features Gobrecht's Seated Liberty with "LIBERTY" in raised letters, while the reverse displays the adopted half dollar eagle design with "50 CENTS" below. Restrikes are distinguishable from originals by their lighter weight (approximately 192 grains versus 206.25 grains for originals), conforming to the reduced standard of the 1853 Mint Act, as well as evidence of advanced die state including die rust and wear. This restrike preserves the historically significant transitional die combination for collectors who cannot obtain one of the two known originals. The restrike was produced in the late 1850s or 1860s as part of the broader pattern restrike program.

Rarity Notes

R.7+. Extremely rare; only 2-4 restrike examples exist.
