(1838) Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-75a
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-75a is a pattern half dollar with a parenthesized date of (1838), indicating it was produced later using 1838-dated obverse dies. The obverse features the Kneass-attributed Liberty head design facing left with luxuriant tresses falling to her shoulder, the word "LIBERTY" on the ribbon in her hair, seven stars to the left, six to the right, and the date 1838 below. The reverse employs Anthony C. Paquet's perched eagle design, featuring a ribbon across the shield continuing to the eagle's beak, with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "HALF DOLLAR" in tall letters. This Paquet reverse die was created in 1859 and was paired with the earlier 1838-dated obverse die to create restrike patterns for collectors. The parenthesized date in the title indicates this is recognized as a later production despite bearing the 1838 date. These Paquet-reverse restrikes are cataloged separately from the original 1838 patterns that used Gobrecht's reverse designs.
