The 1837 Modified Matron Head Coronet Head Cent - Plain Cords, Medium Letters is a cent from the Philadelphia Mint, belonging to the Modified Matron Head Coronet Head Cents 1835-1839 series. The U.S. Mint produced 5.6 million examples, making this the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only 33% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a hair ribbon inscribed LIBERTY, with a coronet of stars around her head and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT. Minted during the age of Jacksonian democracy and the rise of the common man, as new branch mints opened in Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $30 to $612 depending on grade and condition.
