Description

This 1837 copper Liberty / Not One Cent token is a die variety within the E PLURIBUS UNUM subgroup, identified by specific diagnostic features of both the obverse Liberty head and the reverse wreath design. The 28mm diameter and copper composition are standard for circulatory Hard Times Tokens, and the "MILLIONS FOR DEFENCE NOT ONE CENT FOR TRIBUTE" motto encircles the reverse. The proliferation of die varieties within the Liberty/Not One Cent series — at least eighteen numbered types from HT-35 through HT-52 — reflects the enormous commercial success of this design. Token manufacturers found that the cent-like appearance of the Liberty Head obverse made these tokens the most readily accepted of all Hard Times Tokens in daily commerce, creating sustained demand that required multiple die pairs and extensive production runs. Die sinkers working on the Liberty/Not One Cent series operated in several cities, with New York and Waterbury, Connecticut being the primary production centers. The Scovill Manufacturing Company of Waterbury, the largest producer of Hard Times Tokens overall, produced a significant portion of the Liberty/Not One Cent varieties through their partnership with English die cutter William Eaves, whose skilled handiwork is evident in the finer examples of the series.
