(1832) Token HT-2A, Andrew Jackson
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This white metal variety of an 1832 Andrew Jackson Hard Times Token features a bust of Jackson on the obverse with "ANDREW JACKSON PRESIDENT" and a political reverse design. White metal, a tin-based alloy sometimes containing antimony or lead, was occasionally used for token strikings intended as presentation pieces or proofs rather than for general circulation. The choice of white metal for political tokens of this period was uncommon and indicates this piece was produced as a special striking, for distribution among party officials or prominent supporters of Jackson's anti-Bank campaign. White metal pieces tend to be softer and more susceptible to damage than copper or brass, which further limits the survival rate of these pieces in collectible condition. White metal Hard Times Tokens occupy a special niche in the series, representing the intersection of political propaganda and numismatic craftsmanship. The Jacksonian era was the first in American history to see widespread use of tokens and medals as instruments of political communication, prefiguring the campaign buttons and promotional items that would become standard features of American electoral politics.
Rarity Notes
Rare. White metal strikings are among the scarcest compositions in the Hard Times Token series. Very few examples known.
