(1832) Token HT-3A, Andrew Jackson
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This silver striking of the 1832 Andrew Jackson "Bank Must Perish" series represents one of the most prestigious composition variants in the Hard Times Token series. Silver strikings were almost certainly produced as presentation pieces or special collector specimens rather than for circulation. The obverse depicts Andrew Jackson's portrait with the presidential legend, and the reverse carries the politically charged anti-Bank imagery. The irony of striking a "hard money" political piece in silver was intentional — silver coinage was precisely the type of currency Jackson and his supporters championed over the paper banknotes issued by the Bank of the United States. The Coinage Act of 1834, which reduced the gold-to-silver ratio, was part of the Jacksonian monetary reform agenda aimed at increasing the circulation of metallic currency and reducing dependence on bank paper. Silver Hard Times Tokens are exceptionally rare across the entire series. Most surviving examples show careful handling consistent with deliberate preservation, indicating they were valued from the time of issue. This piece occupies the highest tier of rarity in the Jackson political token series and is a major acquisition for advanced collectors of American political numismatics.
Rarity Notes
Very rare. Silver strikings are among the most elusive compositions in the entire Hard Times Token series. Fewer than a dozen examples survive.
