Description
The 1837 Capped Bust Dime was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a dime in the Capped Bust Dimes 1809-1837 series. With a mintage of 359,500, this is a scarce issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 100% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a mob cap or turban and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The final year of the Capped Bust Dime before the Seated Liberty design replaced it in 1837. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $54 to $2.3K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 89.2% silver, 10.8% copper, weighing 2.67 grams, 18.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #4529.
