Description

Judd-55 Restrike is the proof restrike version of the 1836 two-cent pattern, struck in copper with a plain edge and medal-turn die alignment. The obverse features a small eagle with outstretched wings standing on a cloud, with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" around the periphery and the date "1836" below. The reverse displays the denomination "TWO CENTS" within a laurel wreath. The two-cent denomination was proposed as part of the Act of January 13, 1837, though the provision for this denomination was deleted before the bill was passed; the two-cent coin would not become a reality until 1864. Restrikes are always found with a plain edge and medal-turn orientation, and are always proofs, produced in the late 1850s to satisfy collector demand. The restrike shows evidence of late die state with possible die cracks, distinguishing it from original strikes which have reeded edges and coin-turn alignment.

Rarity Notes

R.7. Approximately 5-8 restrike examples exist.
