Description

This silvered brass variety of the 1834 Gulian Verplanck token adds a silver surface wash to the standard brass planchet. The silvering elevates this piece from the category of common circulatory token to that of a semi-premium or presentation specimen, and the relative obscurity of Verplanck compared to Jackson or Webster makes silvered examples of this type particularly uncommon. Gulian Crommelin Verplanck was born into one of New York's oldest and most distinguished Dutch families. Beyond his political career, he was a literary figure of some note — a member of the "Knickerbocker" group of New York writers and an advocate for copyright reform and public education. His intellectual breadth and social standing made him a natural subject for the kind of political commemoration that Hard Times Tokens provided, even if his public profile never reached the heights of Webster or Clay. The silvered brass composition of this variety reflects the production practices of the era, when token manufacturers routinely offered their products in multiple metals to appeal to different market segments. The silvered version would have commanded a modest premium over the plain brass version, appealing to collectors or political supporters who wanted a more distinguished-looking piece for their collections or pocket displays.

Rarity Notes

Rare. Silvered brass Verplanck tokens are difficult to locate. Very few examples are known.
