(1834) Token HT-29, William Seward
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1834 brass William Seward token rounds out the main run of Seward varieties before the undated HT-29A. The brass composition and 28mm diameter are consistent with the rest of the Seward subseries, maintaining the format that made Hard Times Tokens readily interchangeable with official large cents in everyday commerce. The political messaging on Seward tokens from this period consistently emphasized themes of constitutional governance, sound banking, and resistance to executive overreach. These messages resonated with the Whig electorate, particularly in New York, where the commercial classes depended on stable credit and reliable currency for their business operations. The Panic of 1837 and subsequent depression provided dramatic vindication of Whig warnings about the consequences of destroying the Bank, though the causes of the economic crisis were more complex than any single policy decision. Brass Hard Times Tokens from the Seward series are collected both as political Americana and as examples of early American token coinage. The numismatic market for these pieces draws on collectors from both specialties, with political collectors focusing on design and historical content while token specialists emphasize die varieties, compositions, and condition.
