(1834) Token HT-12, Running Boar
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This 1834 brass Running Boar token is distinguished by its die combination from other Running Boar varieties in the HT-9 through HT-13R group. The brass composition provides the characteristic golden-yellow appearance that collectors use to quickly differentiate it from copper strikings. HT-12 features a slightly larger diameter of 29mm compared to the 28mm of most other Running Boar varieties, indicating the use of a slightly larger planchet or a different die collar during production. The 29mm diameter is noteworthy because it exceeds the standard 28mm range that most Hard Times Tokens adhered to. While the difference is small, it indicates either the use of a larger blank (cut from brass sheet stock of a different gauge) or the absence of a constraining collar die during striking. In the relatively unregulated world of private token production, such variations were common and are now cataloged as diagnostic features by collectors and researchers. The Running Boar series represents one of the most visually dynamic designs in American political numismatics. Unlike the static portrait busts that dominate most political tokens and medals, the charging boar is depicted in full motion — an artistic choice that conveyed energy, aggression, and political urgency appropriate to the heated Bank War debates of 1833-1834.
Rarity Notes
Scarce. Brass version with 29mm diameter is less common than the standard copper varieties.
