Description

This 1834 copper Running Boar token is a die variety within the broader Running Boar subseries (HT-9 through HT-13R). Each HT number in this group represents a distinct die combination, with variations in the size, pose, and details of the boar device, the arrangement and content of surrounding inscriptions, and the design of the reverse die. HT-11 is distinguished by specific die characteristics that separate it from HT-9 and other Running Boar varieties. The copper composition and weight of approximately 10.5 grams place this token squarely in the range of the United States large cent, which weighed approximately 10.89 grams under the standards established by the Mint Act of 1792. This near-equivalence was deliberate — token makers intended their products to circulate alongside official coinage, and matching the size and weight of the cent made them more readily accepted in daily commerce. The political context of the Running Boar tokens reflects the fierce partisan warfare of the Jacksonian period. Andrew Jackson's enemies characterized him as an uncultured frontier boor (a near-homophone of "boar") who was trampling constitutional norms and financial stability. Jackson's allies turned such attacks into badges of honor, embracing the common-man image that their opponents intended as an insult.
