Description
The 1834 Capped Head to Left Half Eagle - Plain 4 was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a Gold Half Eagle in the Capped Head to Left Half Eagles 1813-1834 series. All 50,141 Capped Head half eagles of 1834 are counted together, whatever their 4; how many carry the Plain 4 is unknown. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a cap with curls of hair beneath and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Final year of the Capped Head type, replaced mid-year by the Classic Head design after gold weight reduction. Struck in 91.7% gold, 8.3% silver and copper, weighing 8.75 grams, 23.8 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8160.
