Description

Preserved on an 1833 Capped Bust Dime attributed to the Brunk W-438 die marriage identified with H. Wettstein's "Last 3 High" variety, this retained cud documents a rim fracture where the broken die piece remained attached rather than separating completely. In a retained cud, the cracked section stays in place but shifts slightly, producing a visible crack line with subtle displacement — unlike a full cud where the piece breaks away entirely and leaves a raised featureless mass. The "R" suffix confirms this break occurred on the reverse die. The Capped Bust Dime series, designed by William Kneass after John Reich's original concept, was struck at the Philadelphia Mint from 1809 through 1837. These small silver coins — 89.24% silver at approximately 18.5mm diameter — were produced in modest quantities, and surviving die varieties are tracked through multiple reference systems including the Brunk W-numbering and JR (John Reich Collectors Society) attributions. Retained cuds on early silver coinage from the 1830s are scarce in specialized die break catalogs. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins as the first retained cud for this date.
