Description

The 1831 Proof Classic Head Half Cent - 2nd Res, Rev Style of 1840 is a proof cent struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Classic Head Half Cents 1809-1836 series. With a mintage of only 12, this is an extremely rare issue. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a fillet or headband inscribed LIBERTY, while the reverse displays a wreath enclosing HALF CENT. Designed by John Reich. Struck in copper, weighing 5.44 grams, 23.5 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #1192. The Classic Head Half Cent was produced intermittently from 1809 to 1836. The 1811 is a key date. Proof-only and restrike issues from the 1830s are numismatic specialties. Cohen die varieties are actively collected.
