Description
The 1831 Classic Head Half Cent is a cent produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Classic Head Half Cents 1809-1836 series. With a mintage of 2,200, this is an extremely rare issue — the highest mintage among 3 variants, accounting for 99% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a fillet or headband inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing HALF CENT. Original strikings are extremely rare. Most survivors are restrikes made in the 1850s. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Auction record: $43,000 AU50BN 06-21-2020 David Lawrence RC. Struck in copper, weighing 5.44 grams, 23.5 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #1156.
