Description

The 1831 Christopher Bechtler One Dollar Gold Piece without beads is a significant variety in the earliest series of privately minted gold dollars produced in the United States. This variety is distinguished by the absence of a beaded border around the coin's periphery, contrasting with the more common beaded border varieties that Bechtler produced during the same period. The plain border gives the coin a distinctly different visual character and indicates a separate die preparation from the beaded issues. Christopher Bechtler established his private mint in Rutherfordton, North Carolina around 1830 to serve the thriving gold mining communities of the southern Appalachian region. Western North Carolina and northern Georgia were America's primary gold-producing areas before the California Gold Rush of 1849, and the remoteness of these mining districts from the Philadelphia Mint created strong demand for local coinage services. Bechtler's gold dollars were among the first of their denomination struck anywhere in the United States, predating the federal gold dollar by nearly two decades. The no-beads variety represents one of the earliest die configurations Bechtler employed. The obverse displays "CAROLINA GOLD" with the weight designation, while the reverse bears "ONE DOLLAR" and "C. BECHTLER" as the issuer mark. Without the beaded border that typically served as both a decorative element and a rim protection device, this variety is particularly susceptible to edge wear, making well-preserved examples especially desirable to collectors of territorial gold.

Rarity Notes

Very rare. Among the scarcest Christopher Bechtler gold dollar varieties. The absence of beaded borders makes this an early die state or experimental configuration, and fewer examples survive compared to the standard beaded varieties.
