Description
This token from the 1830s bears the "A" prefix indicating later cataloging. The generic title without a city or merchant attribution indicates a piece whose inscriptions are partially illegible or whose design does not clearly identify the issuer. The HT-301 catalog range falls within the New York merchant section. Anonymous tokens in the Hard Times series represent the unresolved mysteries of American commercial numismatics. Each piece was produced by a specific merchant for a specific purpose, but the passage of nearly two centuries has obscured the identities behind some of these tokens. Future discoveries, improved imaging technology, or archival research may eventually resolve these attributions. The "A" prefix varieties often represent pieces that surfaced in the numismatic market long after the primary catalog was compiled, sometimes emerging from old collections, estate sales, or dealer inventories where they had been stored for decades without being cataloged or published.
