1826 So-Called Dollar HK-1002, U.S. Semicentennial
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
HK-1002 is a brass National Jubilee medal of 1826 made in an odd way: Hibler and Kappen believe the obverse and reverse were struck on separate planchets and then joined to make one piece. The two faces are those of the regular issue, 40 mm. One shows an eagle facing left, standing on a shield with a flag and the implements of agriculture and war, an all-seeing eye radiating above and "Cr" at the lower right, inside the words "National Jubilee." The other gives, in seven lines, the pledge of "our lives our fortunes & our sacred honour," inside "Declaration of Independence Signed July 4: 1776." Who made the medal for the fiftieth anniversary of independence is still not known. Silver, copper and white metal strikings are HK-2, HK-3 and HK-4.
