A cent from the Philadelphia Mint, the 1823 Matron Head Coronet Head Cent belongs to the Matron Head Coronet Head Cents 1816-1835 series. With a mintage of 1.3 million, this is a scarce issue — the lowest mintage among 4 mint variants, representing only 25% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a hair ribbon inscribed LIBERTY, with a coronet of stars around her head and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT. The 1823/2 overdate is a notable variety. The 1823 is a semi-key date with a lower mintage. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding.
