Description
The 1823 Capped Bust Dime - 3/2 Small Es is a dime produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Capped Bust Dimes 1809-1837 series. With a mintage of 440,000, this is a less common issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a mob cap or turban and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Struck during a period of national unity and westward expansion following the War of 1812, as the U.S. grew in confidence and territory. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $127 to $4.2K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 89.2% silver, 10.8% copper, weighing 2.7 grams, 19 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #4498.
