Description

The 1822 Capped Bust Quarter is a quarter produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Capped Bust Quarters 1815-1838 series. With a mintage of 64,080, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 3 mint variants by mintage, with 50% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a mob cap or turban and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Struck during a period of national unity and westward expansion following the War of 1812, as the U.S. grew in confidence and territory. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $7.1K to $106K depending on grade and condition.
