Description
The 1821 Capped Bust Quarter is a quarter produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Capped Bust Quarters 1815-1838 series. With a mintage of 216,851, this is a less common issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 100% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a mob cap or turban and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Struck during a period of national unity and westward expansion following the War of 1812, as the U.S. grew in confidence and territory. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $166 to $8.6K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 89.2% silver, 10.8% copper, weighing 6.74 grams, 27.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #5331.
