(1813) Silver Medal J-NA-7, Restrike Lt. William Burrows
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
The circa 1813 silver restrike of the naval medal cataloged as Julian NA-7 honors Lieutenant William Burrows, killed commanding USS Enterprise against HMS Boxer. The silver composition marks this as a premium production significantly scarcer than bronze versions, produced in very limited quantities for collectors seeking precious-metal examples of the War of 1812 naval medals. The obverse features Burrows's portrait rendered in silver. The reverse carries commemorative imagery of the September 5, 1813 engagement off the Maine coast. Silver naval medals from the War of 1812 era are among the more desirable pieces in the Julian naval series. The Enterprise-Boxer engagement was significant beyond its tactical outcome because it demonstrated continued American naval competence in ship-to-ship combat during the second year of the War of 1812. The battle occurred during a period when the initial American frigate victories of 1812 had given way to a more contested naval war as the Royal Navy deployed additional forces to American waters.
Rarity Notes
Silver restrike is rare. Very limited production compared to bronze versions. Among the scarcer War of 1812 naval medals in precious metal.
