Description
The circa 1779 bronze restrike of the naval medal cataloged as Julian NA-1 honors Captain John Paul Jones, the most celebrated naval commander of the American Revolution. Jones earned his medal for the epic engagement between his ship Bonhomme Richard and the British warship HMS Serapis on September 23, 1779 off Flamborough Head, England — one of the most famous naval battles in history and the source of Jones's legendary declaration "I have not yet begun to fight!" The obverse features a portrait of Jones in naval dress. The reverse depicts imagery commemorating the battle, including the two ships locked in combat. This bronze restrike was produced from original or replacement dies at a later date than the original Paris Mint production. Jones's victory over the Serapis was remarkable because the Bonhomme Richard was a converted French merchantman significantly outgunned by the purpose-built British warship. When his ship was sinking and on fire, Jones lashed the two vessels together and led a boarding action that captured the Serapis. The Bonhomme Richard subsequently sank, and Jones sailed to the Netherlands aboard his captured prize.
Rarity Notes
Bronze restrike produced in limited quantities. Jones's fame as the "Father of the American Navy" ensures this is one of the most sought-after Revolutionary War naval medals.
