Description
The circa 1779 silver naval medal cataloged as Julian NA-1, produced at the Philadelphia Mint (as distinguished from Paris Mint productions), honors Captain John Paul Jones. This version was struck at the U.S. Mint using dies that may differ from the original Augustin Dupre dies used at the Paris Mint, reflecting the American Mint's production of its own version of this iconic Revolutionary War medal. The obverse features Jones's naval portrait in silver. The reverse carries commemorative imagery of the Bonhomme Richard engagement with HMS Serapis. The distinction between Paris Mint and Philadelphia Mint productions is an important collecting point, as the dies and striking characteristics differ between the two facilities. Jones died in Paris on July 18, 1792 at the age of forty-five, largely forgotten and impoverished. His remains were rediscovered in 1905 and returned to the United States with full military honors. He was interred at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland in an elaborate crypt modeled on Napoleon's tomb at Les Invalides.
Rarity Notes
Silver U.S. Mint production is scarce. Distinguished from Paris Mint versions by die characteristics and production quality.
