Description
The 1804 Capped Bust to Right Quarter Eagle - 14 Star Reverse was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a Gold Quarter Eagle in the Capped Bust to Right Quarter Eagles 1796-1807 series. The Mint struck 3,327 quarter eagles dated 1804, 13 Star and 14 Star reverses together; how they divide is not recorded, and estimates of the 13 Star coins run from about 250 (John Dannreuther) to 1,003 (Walter Breen). The obverse features Liberty facing right in a soft cap, and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle, shield on breast, holding a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, with E PLURIBUS UNUM on a ribbon in its beak and clouds and stars above. The 1804 quarter eagles were struck from two reverse dies, one with 13 stars above the eagle and one with 14. Struck in 91.7% gold, 8.3% silver and copper, weighing 4.37 grams, 20 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7652.
