CU-1C-1803-08R Cud

Description
Eighth reverse cud documented on the 1803 Draped Bust Cent, CU-1C-1803-08R extends the remarkably deep catalog of rim fractures recorded on this early American copper date. With at least eight reverse cuds cataloged, the 1803 cent reverse dies emerge as particularly susceptible to peripheral failure — a pattern that may reflect a specific batch of die steel, a particular die sinker's technique, or the accumulated stress of striking the large 29mm planchets required for the cent denomination. The Small Date, Large Fraction variety on which this cud appears features the fraction 1/100 below the wreath on the reverse, with thin raised elements in both the wreath and fraction that concentrated striking pressure along narrow contact lines. Robert Scot supervised die production at the Philadelphia Mint during this period, and his engraving staff worked with hand-cut dies produced from imported or domestically smelted crucible steel. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins under cross-reference CU-1C-1803-08R, this variety represents one of the most substantial accumulations of cud documentation for any single year in the Draped Bust series. Collectors assembling a comprehensive 1803 cud set face the challenge of locating examples across at least eight documented reverse breaks, each representing a distinct die failure event during the early years of American copper coinage.
