Description
This is the 100/000 fraction variety of the 1801 Draped Bust Cent (S-221): the reverse die was cut with the blundered fraction 1/000, and the error was corrected by punching a 1 over the first 0. Any mintage given below counts the entire issue for this date and mint, not this variety: a variety comes from one die or a few, and how many coins they struck was never separately recorded. Part of the Draped Bust Cents 1796-1807 series, the 1801 Draped Bust Cent - 100/000 Fraction is a cent from the Philadelphia Mint. The 1801 Draped Bust Cent issue as a whole had a mintage of 1.4 million; how many coins carry this variety is unknown. The obverse features Liberty facing right with draped bust and ribbon-bound hair, designed after a Gilbert Stuart portrait and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT and fraction 1/100. Produced during the earliest years of the United States Mint, when the young republic was establishing its monetary system and coinage traditions. Struck in copper, weighing 10.89 grams, 28 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #1467.
