Description
A Gold Quarter Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint, the 1798 Capped Bust to Right Quarter Eagle - Close Date belongs to the Capped Bust to Right Quarter Eagles 1796-1807 series. With a mintage of 1,094, this is a scarce issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty facing right wearing a cloth cap (pileus) and the reverse displays a small, naturalistic eagle perched on a palm branch within a wreath (through 1798) or a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM (1804-1807). Close date and wide date varieties known. All 1798 quarter eagles are rare. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $12K to $938K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 91.7% gold, 8.3% copper, weighing 4.37 grams, 20 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
