Description

A half cent from the Philadelphia Mint, the 1797 Liberty Cap Right Half Cent - Gripped Edge belongs to the Liberty Cap Right Half Cents 1794-1797 series. Philadelphia struck 127,840 half cents dated 1797 in all, and the number with the gripped edge is not recorded. The obverse features Liberty facing right with a Phrygian cap on a pole behind her head and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing HALF CENT and 1/200. The final Liberty Cap Right Half Cent. Plain, lettered and gripped edges exist. The 1 Above 1 variety has a second 1 punched above the first in the date. Struck in copper, weighing 5.44 grams, 23.5 mm in diameter, with a gripped edge. Cataloged as PCGS #1039.
