Description
The 1797 Draped Bust Dollar - 9x7 Stars, Large Letters represents a Philadelphia Mint issue from the Draped Bust Dollars 1795-1804 series. All 1797 dollars, 10x6 and 9x7 alike, are counted in the 7,776 figure; the number with 9x7 stars and Large Letters is unknown. The obverse features Liberty facing right with draped bust and ribbon-bound hair, a portrait traditionally credited to Gilbert Stuart, and the reverse displays a small eagle standing on a cloud, inside an open wreath. Both 9 Stars Left/7 Stars Right and 10 Stars Left/6 Stars Right obverse varieties known. Struck in 89.2% silver, 10.8% copper, weighing 26.96 grams, 40 mm in diameter, with a lettered: hundred cents one dollar or unit edge. Cataloged as PCGS #6863.
