Description
The 1797 Capped Bust to Right Eagle - Heraldic Eagle, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, is part of the Capped Bust to Right Eagles 1795-1804 collection. Walter Breen's reading of the delivery records gives 10,940 Heraldic Eagle coins dated 1797, delivered from June 7, 1797 to January 30, 1798; John Dannreuther suggests 8,750 to 12,500 eagles dated 1797 in all. The Mint's own report for calendar 1797 gives 9,177 eagles, Small Eagle and Heraldic Eagle together. The obverse features Liberty facing right in a soft cap, and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle, shield on breast, holding a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, with E PLURIBUS UNUM on a scroll and clouds and stars above. Both small eagle and large (heraldic) eagle reverse varieties exist, making 1797 a transitional year. Struck in 91.7% gold, 8.3% silver and copper, weighing 17.5 grams, 33 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8559.
