Description

The 1796 Silver Token Myddelton is a proof token struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Post-1776 Private and Regional Issues (1778-1820) series. Produced during the earliest years of the United States Mint, when the young republic was establishing its monetary system and coinage traditions. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Auction record: $276,000 • PR65 • 05-2014 • Heritage Auctions. Struck in silver, weighing 13 grams, 29 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #649.
