Description
The 1796 Draped Bust Cent - Reverse of 1797 was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a cent in the Draped Bust Cents 1796-1807 series. All 1796 Draped Bust cents share the reported total of 363,375; how many were struck with the Reverse of 1797 is not recorded. The obverse features Liberty facing right with draped bust and ribbon-bound hair, designed after a Gilbert Stuart portrait and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT and fraction 1/100. First year of the Draped Bust design on the large cent. The year also includes the LIHERTY obverse, a single die on which the B in LIBERTY was first punched upside down and then corrected. Struck in copper, weighing 10.89 grams, 28 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #1407.
