Description
The 1796 Capped Bust to Right Quarter Eagle - No Stars is a Gold Quarter Eagle minted at the Philadelphia Mint, within the Capped Bust to Right Quarter Eagles 1796-1807 series. The Mint delivered 963 No Stars quarter eagles in 1796, 66 on September 21 and 897 on December 8; the figure is Walter Breen's grouping of the two deliveries. The Mint's annual report gives 66 quarter eagles for calendar 1796 and 1,756 for 1797, which together equal the 1796 and 1797 date figures (963, 432 and 427). The obverse features Liberty facing right in a soft cap, and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle, shield on breast, holding a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, with E PLURIBUS UNUM on a ribbon in its beak and clouds and stars above. First year of the quarter eagle. The first two 1796 obverse dies had no stars; a third, with sixteen stars, struck the 432 coins delivered on January 14, 1797. Struck in 91.7% gold, 8.3% silver and copper, weighing 4.37 grams, 20 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7645.
