Description

Among the earliest documented cud errors in American numismatics, the CU-1c-1794-02 is a cud variety on the 1794 Liberty Cap Cent, specifically the Exact Head of 1795 subtype. Cuds are major die breaks at the rim where a section of the die fractures away, leaving a void that fills with metal on struck coins to produce a raised, featureless blob at or near the edge. On high-grade examples the boundary between the design and the cud zone is sharply defined; on circulated specimens the cud remains identifiable even through heavy wear. The cud is cross-referenced as LCC-04-1 in the Thurman and Margolis Cud Book, the standard cataloguing reference for Liberty Cap cent cuds. The 1794 Liberty Cap cent was struck in the Philadelphia Mint's early production years, using a design attributed to Joseph Wright. The Exact Head of 1795 subtype carries portrait characteristics of the following year's head type. Cuds on early American copper are actively collected as documentation of die failure at the founding of the American Mint, connecting to one of the rarest series in the entire coinage canon.
