Description
The 1789' Token Mott - Thick - Engrailed Edge is filed under Mott Token in the Post-1776 Private and Regional Issues (1778-1820) series. The Mott token, dated 1789, was issued by William and John Mott of 240 Water Street, New York, who sold watches, clocks and jewelry, and Crosby calls it generally conceded to be the first tradesman's token issued in America, made in England. One side shows a clock with an eagle on top and the firm's advertising legend; the other an eagle with a shield and the date. Crosby records plain and milled edges and weights from 108 to 171 grains, with a die break at the upper left corner of the clock on most pieces. PCGS lists it as #606.
