Description

This 1784 bronze medal (Betts-619) is the original striking of the Winged Genius / Franklin Diplomatic Medal, one of the most iconic designs in the entire Betts catalog. The obverse features Benjamin Franklin's portrait, and the reverse shows a winged female figure (Genius) presenting a branch to a figure representing America, symbolizing the Franco-American alliance that Franklin negotiated. The 1784 date places this original production in the year after the peace treaties, when Franklin remained in Paris as the American minister. This bronze original is the standard by which all later restrikes — in bronze, silver, and various edge marks — are measured. Medallic commemoration of colonial events was not limited to military victories — treaties, explorations, trading company foundings, missionary activities, and colonial administrative milestones all received medallic recognition. The Winged Genius design captures the idealism and optimism of the Franco-American alliance at its moment of greatest triumph.
