Description
Betts-620 is the celebrated "Natus Boston" medal honoring Benjamin Franklin, one of the most important and widely collected medals in American numismatics. This bronze striking features the famous obverse portrait of Franklin inscribed "BENJAMIN FRANKLIN NATUS BOSTON" (Benjamin Franklin, born in Boston), acknowledging his Massachusetts origins even as he became America's most famous Philadelphian and Parisian. The reverse features an allegorical scene designed by Augustin Dupre. The medal was struck at the Paris Mint in 1786 to honor Franklin upon his departure from France after serving as American Minister. Franklin was enormously popular in France, and his image appeared on medals, prints, and decorative objects throughout Paris. The Natus Boston medal represents the culmination of Franklin's diplomatic career in France and stands as one of the finest portrait medals of the eighteenth century, capturing the aging philosopher-diplomat at the height of his international fame.
