Description

The reverse of HK-863d carries the oddest figure in the series: "60,965,269 34/90," the whole amount of Continental currency stated as issued, set above "April 11th" and inside the border legend "Continental Currency. * 1778 *." Professor Dickeson's reverses in this group each pair a date from the Second Continental Congress with a currency total, and this is the 1778 one; the two others read three million for May 10th and November 29th, 1775. The obverse is the Perseverando beaver chewing on a palm tree in a stream, a vignette from the six-dollar bills of 1775-1778. The same April 11th die was later paired with the Confederation altar design for HK-866 and HK-866a. Hibler and Kappen list HK-863d in white metal only, 39 mm, giving no DeLorey number.
