Coin Details
Description
Silver is the precious metal in the long run of Continental Currency and Confederation pieces, and HK-860a is that striking, DeLorey 88. One face copies the 1776 Continental dollar: a sundial with the sun's rays, "Fugio" beside the sun, the motto "Mind Your Business" and the legend "Continental Currency." The other face borrows the Confederation scene of the forty-dollar notes of 1778 and 1779, an eye in the clouds shining on a burning altar ringed by thirteen stars. Hibler and Kappen once filed these medals under Thomas L. Elder but now place them with Professor Montroville W. Dickeson, the physician and antiquarian who made struck copies of the Continental dollar as souvenirs in 1876. The pairing also exists in copper, brass, German-silver, white metal (HK-860), aluminum, lead and fiber. Silver, 39 mm.
