1776 So-Called Dollar HK-862b, Continental Currency Uniface
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Only one side of HK-862b is struck; the back is left plain. That side is Professor Dickeson's copy of the Continental dollar obverse: a sundial inside a circle with the sun's rays coming from the upper left, "Mind Your Business" beneath, "Fugio" and the sun between the inner and outer circles, "Continental Currency" around and 1776 below. The original Continental dollar dies were cut that year by Elisha Gallaudet, a New York engraver, and the designs follow fractional notes of February 1776 said to have come from Benjamin Franklin. Hibler and Kappen catalogue the one-sided pieces as DeLorey 89, between the Confederation dollars and the Perseverando dollars, in brass (HK-861), German-silver (HK-862), copper (HK-862a) and aluminum. This is the aluminum uniface piece, 39 mm.
